“I can think. I can wait. I can fast.” ~Siddhartha

MG resumes the fasting discussion after recognizing there were a few items left on the “table.”
Beginning with this passage from Siddhartha:
“I can think, I can wait, I can fast.” The statement raised the question, “Can I really fast?”

Is that all?
I think that is all.
And of what use are they? For example, fasting, what good is that?
It is of great value, sir. If a man has nothing to eat, fasting is the most intelligent thing he can do. If, for instance, Siddhartha had not learned to fast, he would have had to seek some kind of work today, either with you, or elsewhere, for hunger would have driven him. But, as it is, Siddhartha can wait calmly. He is not impatient, he is not in need, he can ward off hunger for a long time and laugh at it. Therefore, fasting is useful, sir.

Beyond the Siddhartha reference, fasting offers a relatively quick and powerful way to demonstrate self-efficacy, which is the ability to produce a desired result.
When you fast, you are telling yourself that you will not eat for a period of time, and therefore, when you do precisely that, you feel a sense of control, which is a key factor in happiness.
MG further points out that for those who may be looking for an inexpensive adventure, fasting fits the bill. Not only does it cost nothing, it ends up saving you money.
Further, fasting resulted in a both an increased level of energy and creativity.
