S3-37: Eric Berman:
Entrepreneur Extraordinaire

“If you’re listening to this… I want you to try this for twenty-four hours. Think about every situation, and say to yourself, ‘I am responsible.’ If you don’t do that you’ll stagnate and never get ahead.” ~Eric Berman

A varied and enviable background, EB has been a bachelor on the hit reality show Millionaire Matchmaker. He’s stood in the winner’s circle multiple times at Del Mar as part of the winning horse’s ownership group. He’s part owner in multiple popular restaurants throughout San Diego, and perhaps best of all (at least according to MG), he is long-term business partners with the personal development legend Brian Tracy.

EB begins the show sharing how some early career success with a Facebook-like company (collegeclub.com) in the ’90s goes terribly sideways as it collides head first into the exploding dot-com disaster of the late ’90s.

As “guy #3” in the fast-growing company, he was close to all the action when his company failed to qualify for a bridge loan amid the market collapse; before long they had to lay off 200+ employees and ultimately file bankruptcy.

EB shares how he adapted, took stock of what he did have, and kept moving. Not too much later a family friend connected him with Brian Tracy, and Eric shares his secret offer and strategy that makes his sales pitch a true no-brainer!

MG asks EB for his very best personal development /success tip after working so closely with BT for fifteen-plus years, and it comes down to just THREE WORDS! (minute 38:00)

S3-29: FAF -What’s the #1 Trait for Success?

SUCCESS! Seems everyone wants it and today’s question is (if there is one) what is the #1 trait that determines one’s success.

Both MG and Henry recognize this could easily result in multiple-days worth of discussions and certainly there are hundreds if not thousands of books written on the matter. Having said that, they both manage to narrow their answer down to a few, very select traits.

The best part (as you know) is any of these traits is create-able via the magical force of HABIT!

Tune in and then let MG and Henry know what YOU think the #1 trait is!

S3-14: FAF – Opportunity Rising

The subject of this FAF (Frequently Asked Friday) rolls right out of MG’s GTR, “Good Things Report” which involves his recent visit to Dallas for Russell Brunson’s Funnelhacking live event.

If you’re not familiar, Clickfunnels is a powerful marketing/selling software solution developed to provide business owners (really anyone who sells anything online) an easy to build, and in many cases, a pre-built sales “funnel” ? a tool that drives prospects through a friendly sales process.

However, the question comes up, “What was the BIG takeaway from the 3 day event?” Martin’s response has almost nothing to do with the Clickfunnels software itself!

It’s an inspiring takeaway though and it should fire-up anyone who’s interested in promoting and selling their service/solution and/or products online.

Martin shares that a couple of the speakers at the event who used RB’s Clickfunnels software had sold upwards of $100,000 before they were 15.

One of the key messages from the kids who presented was “Adults just over-think things!”. So, if you’re an entrepreneur or really just about anyone, selling anything online ClickFunnels just might be the perfect fit for you.

S02-Mind Bullet: Success in Common Hours

“If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.” Henry David Thoreau

In this episode Martin revisits this quote by the famous essayist — a quote that sent him on a journey of personal discovery and analysis about the enigma that is “success”.

In this famous quote Henry David Thoreau points out with great assurance that, “he WILL meet with a success in common hours”. Notice that HDT doesn’t say he “might” or that he “could” but that he “WILL”!

After years of analysis and reaffirming this statement, Martin has settled on much the same truth. That success is not a destination but a realization along the journey and is experienced as one pursues their ideal future confidently.

It seems that it is only when one advances confidently toward their dreams and works hard realize the life that they have imaged that the improbable happens — that they are met with the feeling of success in “common” hours.

HDT’s formula is crystal clear:

1) have an ideal vision, a dream to pursue

2) work hard to achieve it

3) move confidently every day toward it

When you can check off those three boxes each and every day you will meet with a success in common hours.

S02-Frequently Asked Friday 15: “What If I Fail?”

Martin begins this episode by talking about his 13 year old daughter and her recent run for student council president. His first thought… “Oh no! What if she loses!” And, then he silently figures he’d better prepare a consolation speech for her.

The encounter got him thinking though about a few things. First, how brave she was (only two other candidates -girls- were willing to run) and that somewhere in her mind (perhaps) she had to be accepting of the idea of failure— not winning the election.

Considering the value of being willing to fail further, Martin mentions that in a prior episode he spoke about the idea, what would you do if you knew you could NOT fail.

However, now, thinking about this event, he recognizes that there may be even more power in accepting the possibility of failure and proceeding anyway.

In fact, it’s the acceptance of failure not the rejection that helps to remove the resistance and may actually facilitate getting on started on ANY journey— knowing that they might fail but doing whatever they can to prevent it from happening.

Taking a queue from top athletes the idea of releasing any expectations of the outcome; whether it’s a swing of a tennis racquet, a shot going through the basketball hoop or a golf shot, accepting the possibility of failure allows one to improve and succeed!

After all, if failure is the pathway to success then perhaps it isn’t about “not failing” as much as it is about being willing to fail!

S02-Frequently Asked Friday 11: What is success if you don’t know your main goal in life?

This question comes via Quora.com and Martin has a link at the bottom to the entire post/response (partially posted here).

In this episode, Martin reads his reply and adds a little color along the way. He shares his experience teaching “Success Skills” for C.L.A.S.S. Corporate Leaders Advocating Success Skills (volunteer instructor for Junior Achievement) at some of San Diego’s more impoverished neighborhoods.

During the course, Martin changed the recommended definition of “success” as provided by the curriculum and teaches a slightly different definition. Then he shares some thoughts about just what the OPPOSITE of success might be if it isn’t failure.

MG’s answer on quora.com:

I really like this question. From my experience I’ve found “success” to be a very enigmatic concept/subject which I’m sure explains why so many of us struggle with it.

The SHORT ANSWER to your question:
It is going to be difficult if not impossible, (as evidenced by your question) to find success without a desireable destination, target or goal.

So, do you have any feel for What your ideal future looks like?

Simply reverse engineer any great “success” and you will notice they know at the very least or, knew what their target was/what they were going after.

That doesn’t mean they hit it, it just means they had a direction to aim for (fostering positive action and habits).

Prolonged aimlessness can be very problematic.

Try this: Ask 10 people if they want to be a “success”. My guess is all 10 will say “YES”.

Then, ask those same 10 people to DEFINE what “success” means to them… <more? see link below and visit quora.com>

Revisit: The Law of Cosmic Habit Force

S02-INT06: Jon Carder, Super Entrepreneur: Lessons in Perseverence (Keeping the Dream Alive)

After selling his company for millions at age 26, Jon Carder briefly retires to surf the South Pacific. It turns out to be a very short “retirement” that lasts only about 3 weeks…

“I think doing a business for money is absolutely the wrong motivation and will actually lead to a lot of challenges.

“The only thing you have to do to be successful is to be better than just about everyone else at just one thing. It’s simple but it’s not easy.” ~Jon Carder

At just 26, Jon Carder was featured on the cover of Fortune Small Business magazine (link) wearing just board shorts and holding a surfboard as the sun set with the title, “Time to Sell?” He had just sold his company for millions and was ready to “retire” and surf.

But Jon Carder isn’t your typical Southern California surf rat. He’s also been featured in Business Insider and dozens of other publications and is an active member of the Entrepreneurs Organization and a mentor with The Founders Institute. He has founded several multi-million-dollar companies, and along the way has raised upwards of $35 million.

While his “success” story is legendary, it’s actually his entire story— the failures, the struggles and all the hard work, agility and perseverance — that make for a very educational and entertaining interview, particularly for the aspiring entrepreneur.

In this episode, Jon recounts his unique journey from selling microwaved hot dogs in his neighborhood as a kid, to selling baby products at a swap meet in college and later selling one of his companies for millions. Today, Jon is on the precipice of changing the face of online-to-offline commerce with his innovative technology.

In this episode JC shares:

  • Why not to start any business
  • The surfing insight that led to his abundance mindset
  • How following others’ insights helped him evolve his companies
  • Why great marketing can never make up for poor customer service — there’s a funny story here
  • The critical importance of focus
  • How he picked himself up through failure and depression to start his second company— the one he ultimately sold!
  • How three months into his next company they netted over $100,000
  • How he actually applied the lessons learned from his prior company failure
  • The birthing of MojoPages, MOGL and of course, Empyr
  • His desire and passion to create a positive impact
  • Donating about 1 million meals to help feed those in need
  • The origination of his online-to-offline platform and API, a HUGE opportunity resulting from his persistence and something known as the “corridor principle”
  • The KEY mindset that carries him through the darkest of times
  • Relax HARD!
  • His key success habits these days
  • and so much more…

“What really makes me happy is following that journey, and not just for the ups and downs, but doing it for the potential positive impact…the bigger the impact the more thrilling the ride.”
