S02-Mind Bullet Monday 17: The Power of Quadrant #2!

“The key is tricking yourself to move quadrant two items to quadrant one when possible.”

This episode Martin revisits Stephen Covey’s classic Effectiveness or Time Management Grid.

Many of us become great at “getting stuff done” (GTD) the only challent is that often it’s NOT the the important stuff that, in the long run, will make us feel content, accomplished and like we’ve lived a life that was worth living.

All too often that “stuff” resides in quadrant one as Dr. Covey points out yet, it’s quadrant #2 as Covey defines it, where things the important but not urgent items are that have the most value to us.

What sort of things can be found in quadrant #2?

-Planning and strategy
-Setting a vision
-Exercising
-Reading to your children
-Vocation
-Prevention
-Long-Term Goals

Martin explores this idea that within his latest book, The Pressure Paradox™ one of the underlying themes was the importance to creating a sense of urgency (pressure) and how a key to being more effective is moving the those long-term goals into quadrant 1.

For instance, the book and even the app as well as goals like the Ironman and catalina classic were all quadrant #2 items. And, it was via the use of The Habit Factor that helped move those key behaviors (habits) into quadrant #1.

Check it out — listen to today’s episode and see if you can’t identify the important quadrant #2 items in your life and make sure you are tracking the important habits that will help you achieve your goals!

S02-Mind Bullet Monday 08: Are You Really Committed?

“There is a HUGE difference between being interested versus being committed to an outcome or goal. For most people, if they are being honest with themselves, they are only interested…”

Martin kicks off this episode with a personal realization and a confession. Realizing that earlier in the prior month he said to himself, “I’m going to run 35 miles this month.”

So, what was the problem?

Well, that was ALL it was… just talk! There was NO PLAN and there was really no action. It was a “nice to have” but certainly not a commitment!

To be committed— truly committed is the first step for goals that are meaningful.

Talking about a goal or even having a vision of achieving a goal is worth very little without backing it up with sincere commitment.

So, how do you know what you have sincere commitment? Easy.

— Is there a PLAN?
— Is there consistent action? Have the core behaviors/habits been identified?
— Are you TRACKING these behaviors? If you are not tracking your progress you are not serious about your goal.
— Be sure to Reassess – your strategy, your results and be flexible in your approach!

“I had no plan, I took limited action and I really wasn’t committed to tracking or even assessing any progress along the way. It was just talk….”

Near the end of the episode Martin shares an old parable about the hen and the pig who decide to open a restaurant together as equal partners. However, the pig objects and for good reason!

Find out why… listen to episode and be sure to share this Mind Bullet Monday.
