S3-41: FAF – Got Any Advice!?

God changes caterpillars into butterflies, sand into pearls and coal into diamonds using TIME & PRESSURE. He’s working on you too” ~Rick Warren

[NOTE: Henry and I set out to complete 35 episodes for Season III and this is episode #41. If you’ve enjoyed the season as much as we did putting it together, PLEASE leave a review on iTunes ; ). Also, there are more shows coming! Be sure you are subscribed! Great news is on the way! Thank you!]

**Technical audio note: Apologies, we had tech issues again on Henry’s end and he was forced to use a different device. At times, connection picks up various background noises. Apologies and appreciate your understanding! ; )**

Coming off the heels of the recent metamorphosis episode, MG shares what he considered might be his #1 tip/piece of advice as he responds to an email. The emailer is excited about The Habit Factor and asks MG, “Do you have any advice?”

At first Martin isn’t too happy about the question, given the amount of “tips” and information already published. However, contemplating the question further, he shares what might be his favorite tip.

Henry then shares his two great tips! Spoiler alert, “We all just need to relax more often and enjoy the ride.”

Henry’s other great idea is powerful, “Be sure to surround yourself with goodness.”

Taking control of our immediate environment and getting our daily dosage of great brain food ensure we “tune our minds to the right stations.”

S3-19: Reis Paluso: Comfort Kills!

“I can now generate heat and then move it throughout my body.” ~Reis Paluso

Brian Tracy has famously said, “Comfort is the great enemy of success.” So, the question is, “HOW COMFORTABLE ARE YOU?”

Reis Paluso is an amazing young man. Martin knows this well as Reis was one of his first “campers” way, way back in 1994-5 at Kreative Kids Computer Camp (Poway/San Diego).

Martin recounts Reis’ amazing computer skills as a young lad and reflects on the joy and challenge of his first “real” entrepreneurial venture with his amazing partners (partners MG still has to this day).

Reis shares in the Kreative Kids memory; learning HTML, multi-media skills (in the early days of the internet) and of course how he became a 46 wpm typist, at age 12!

However, the MEAT of the this episode is all about Reis’ and his recent voyage into the icy mountains of POLAND (bordering on Czech Republic). He ventured there in a quest to learn and experience the Wim Hof Method at an advanced level retreat. And, Reis confirms, this experience really elevated (so to speak) his Wim Hof practice to a whole, new level. (See links below for more about Hof himself).

After many days in an entirely foreign environment, RP shares how he had an emotional “release” really a massive personal breakthrough that he’d never anticipated and it was a direct result of this endeavor which culminates with him hiking up  Mount Snezka (in -15C or, 5ºF) shirtless, with just shoes and shorts on!!

Talk about getting out of your comfort zone!!!

S3-16: Klyn Elsbury: The Change-Maker

“Even in the most difficult times you are the one who gives your situation power by attaching a story to it”. ~Klyn Elsbury

Klyn Elsbury is one of the real change-makers of her generation! She’s written a bestselling book, taught a Zumba class, runs a recruiting firm and perhaps most incredibly has done ALL of these things while battling Cystic Fibrosis, a genetic disorder that affects mostly the lungs.

In fact, Klyn made her battle with Cystic Fibrosis public in 2015 in an effort to combat big pharma and make a critical drug affordable. “I was already taking about 20 other different medications daily, there was no way I could afford that $259,000 price tag so I wrote a heartfelt blog post and that ended up going viral.”

Klyn touches on all of this and shares with Martin a handful of key mindsets that allow her to stay strong and push through the tough days.

Klyn also shares how her company has uniquely positioned itself in the recruiting space, her take on “success”, her best habits, favorite app, and a great book she’s recently enjoyed (links below) all on this episode of Habits 2 Goals.

S02-Mind Bullet Monday 18: “Getting To!”

“As long as you are above ground, these are ALL things you ‘Get to do!'”

How we talk to ourselves determines a vast majority of what we do and do not do.

The language that we use often creates resistance. So, then what happens? Well, we know what we need to do but still don’t do it.

What are the chances that some of that resistance is simply tied to the language that we use?

In this episode Martin begins by asking you to imagine you both work at the same company and he get to “tell you what you have to do”. Doesn’t sound too pleasant does it?

Yet, many of use will go through each day saying that exact statement to ourselves, things like; “I have to pay my bills”. “I have to go to the gym.” “I have to get the car washed.” “I have to go to school” etc.

A subtle and significant shift takes place when we revisit our language and change the way we talk to ourselves. Simply saying, “I get to pay my bills.” “I get to go to the gym” etc. will reduced our reluctance to do them!

What are you telling yourself “you have to do” and how easily can you make that shift?

Check it out — listen to today’s episode and see how changing your dialogue with yourself changes your attitude and your output!

S02-INT09: Eric Kaufmann: The Making of the Hero’s Journey

“Really, what moved me to write this is, what does it take to exist within a well-lived life?”

Eric Kaufmann has coached and counseled executives since 1999. He has identified common themes and patterns that underlie what he’s identified as “Leadership as a Hero’s Journey.” The essential four traits that he’s written extensively about include:

1) FOCUS
2) COURAGE
3) GRIT
4) FAITH

“Focus is what am I creating… what I create is somewhat related to my focus and somewhat related to ‘stuff’…”

In this engaging interview, Martin and Eric discuss the philosophy that underlies much of Eric’s thinking and writing these days—particularly the four virtues as outlined in his book. The two kick things off as they exchange some fun anecdotes about family life with two daughters of the same ages (13 and 15).

Eric’s book is being re-released by a new publisher under a slightly different name, “The Four Virtues of a Leader.”

In this episode, Eric covers:

  • How he defines a HERO
  • The three things each hero is called to do
  • Who a hero really is and the essential traits
  • How he defines each of the FOUR essential virtues
  • Where to put your attention and focus
  • What co-creation really is
  • The essence of responsibility
  • Why leaving the comfort zone is essential
  • The 3 things, according to EK, that everyone fears
  • The highest form of maturity and why a leader is always one who relies on allies
  • The essence of GRIT and what constitutes GRIT
  • The fundamental impermanence of life
  • The significance of shedding past traits, habits and identities to make room for new roles and identities
  • How he defines “success” (Here’s a hint, see Earl Nightengale)
  • His most important habits
  • How he coaches and cultivates his personal mindset during “tough days”
  • The great Hebrew saying, “When you change your spot you change your perspective”
  • Why ephemerality could be the theme of the episode
  • The ability to shed old habits, skills and identities and why it’s critical for growth
  • And so much more!

“If I am buying into my boss is a jerk, then I am now participating in that narrative.”

“Real leaders work with and through others.”

Eric’s diverse and varied life is a commitment to understanding and teaching wisdom. The crucible of Eric’s journey contains 13 years of leadership consulting, management at Fortune 100 firms, degrees in business and psychology, a quarter century of Zen practice, living in Israel and South Africa, teaching as a Master Scuba Diving instructor, and working as a certified hypnotherapist. S02-Mind Bullet Monday 06: The Power of the Mind

“There is no way to happiness. Happiness is the way.” ~Buddhist Proverb

While happiness, as the Buddhist proverb goes, can and should be a choice (most often) there is no doubt our present circumstances and events have great influence upon our current level of happiness.

In fact, what happens more often than not is that we will assign and craft stories about events (in the present) and then layer on our own subjective and speculative implications (stories) about how that event will influence our future.

Interestingly, these future stories (that WE are always, habitually creating at will) in turn than influence our present level of happiness.

The question becomes, do we have the power to change the story, our attention and focus?

Martin touches on the R.A.S.; the Reticular Activation System, a part of the brain helps selectively guide our focus, to see and find those things that we are seeking OR patterns we’ve seen in the past.

“We tend to see what we put our focus upon… If that future story or image projection is not what we would like to see we actually get to change it.”

In fact, you might argue that becomes a core responsibility in our life.

Martin recounts Jobs’ biography by Walter Isaacson, simply titled, Steve Jobs. In the book, Jobs is famous for something Isaacson coined as his “reality distortion field”. This reflected Jobs unrelenting ambition to distort “reality” and current information and events into something that would ultimately serve his imagination and his goals.

Can we not do this?

Martin challenges the listener to try to alter their focus and to craft a story about a positive, hopeful and optimistic future despite any negative current events or circumstances. And, to notice how that impacts your present level of happiness!
