S3-40: Casey Wright:
Opportunity Meets Creativity

“Corey and I have two qualities that I think unite us. One, we are eternal optimists; we always believe our best day is coming.
The other thing is that we have a high risk tolerance. We’ll keep rolling the dice.
We like the idea of saying, ‘We’re going to bet on ourselves a little longer.'”
~Casey Wright

Few entrepreneurs seize an opportunity as quickly and as creatively as Casey Wright. He and his brother Corey, guided by their parents, were encouraged to explore this “internet thing” in the early 2000s, and in particular, how email marketing might help their real estate firm.

Their parents came to them and said they wanted to stop spending $100K on print marketing per year; the brothers thought email marketing might be the answer. To everyone’s surprise, the strategy worked and Casey and his brother were off and running…sort of.

“The first year was exciting, and then you have six years of things not going the way you wanted them to; I’m seeing my friends working half as hard and making twice as much money and wondering if I should just go get in line and find a job.”

Persistence, however, proved to be the path of least resistance. Ultimately, their content-marketing business took off and assumed a new and complementary spin: A Keller Williams office manager wanted to use the brothers’ content-marketing process and apply it toward recruiting new agents! The proposition was, “If you can build this, we will buy it!”

Today, Casey employs the one bit of advice he would give his younger self: “Find a way to put the wind at your back!” Gorilla Goodies is doing just that; Casey’s new venture is responsible for a couple internet smash-sensations, including The Hipster Nativity Scene and the (DT) Donald Trump Bobblehead.

Enjoy the show and take note: He says, “Habit tracking is something I will ALWAYS do!” ; )

S3-36: MBM – Intention.

“True nobility isn’t about being better than someone else, it’s about being better than you used to be.” Dr. Wayne Dyer

Martin tackles this Mind Bullet Monday solo and labels it a bit of a hybrid episode since he bridges concepts and ideas from a couple prior episodes.

This episode is on the heels of the synchronicity/serendipity episode where Martin and Henry compare theories on ways to create an increased frequency of such events in our lives.?? Martin then adds some of the late, great Dr. Wayne Dyer’s thoughts via his bestseller, The Power of Intention. Specifically where Dyer reviews the importance of aligning with the “FACE” of the “Creative” source.

In his book, Dr. Dyer spells out the “Seven Faces of Intention” Creativity, Kindness, Love, Beauty, Expansiveness, Abundance and Receptivity and how Dr. Dyer believed deeply that creating alignment / “matching up” with sources “Faces” of energy was essential.

Martin then takes the entire process a step further, and perhaps makes it sound/concrete by recommending to the listener that they focus upon and TRACK just ONE “FACE” at a time for four weeks following the habit factor method. This one step would mimic the process Benjamin Franklin used that was recently recounted on the a prior episode where Ben tracked his behaviors (habits) to create VIRTUES!

S3-18: MBM – Learning Mastery!

“We do not learn, and that what we call learning is only a process of recollection.” ~Plato

It seems we address certain types of learning differently than say preparing to perform. In other words, to prepare for a performance we will practice, practice, and practice some more. But, when it comes to learning something we expect to see or hear it once and completely know it and be able to recall it.

Crazier still, we tend to think we’re not too smart if we need to relearn the same lesson over and over again.

MG and HE challenge this idea. MG recalls how some of the audio lessons on his playlist he’s heard “hundreds” of times! The EXACT SAME lesson. And, he says, here’s the “crazy” thing? each time he seems to pickup and learn something new.

Why is that? How can you or I hear the same message three times, for instance, and learn or pickup something different each time?

They cover the various reasons behind this phenomena and then, ultimately, propose this is precisely what higher education is about? for instance what PhD students do! They study the SAME SUBJECT over and over and then again, some more. They GO DEEP vs wide (breadth) and cover the same topic from different angles and perspectives. And, because of this, they notice details, nuances and connections most people will never see.

This, learning the same things over and over and then some more, is really what we call expertise. This is what mastery really is!

The Pyramid of Success

“Success is peace of mind, which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to do your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming.” ~Coach John Wooden

What is success? How do you define it? Henry and Martin get DEEP into the subject of SUCCESS. What is it really? And, crazier still, how do YOU define it!?

Don’t think it’s important? This about this: It’s a given that 100% of people want to become a “success”. Yet, the large majority of people haven’t even taken the time to define what success means.

Do you have your own definition of success? Have you refined it and studied it?

Remember, it’s very difficult to hit a target that you can’t see!

SEE John Wooden “The Wizard of Westwood” and his success pyramid. FREE DOWNLOAD

Other definitions of success are explored: Earl Nightingale’s “Success is the progressive realization of a worthy ideal.”

And, Thoreau’s “If one advances confidently in the direction of their dreams and endeavors to live the life they imagine, they will meet with a success in common hours.”

It took Coach Wooden many years to find his correct formula. In 1934 he decided on the cornerstones, Industriousness and Enthusiasm, the two most important building blocks of the pyramid. Completing the foundation of the Pyramid are Friendship, Loyalty and Cooperation.

As the years went by, Coach Wooden built his Pyramid upon 14 building blocks of essential virtues (habits), leading to the apex, the final, 15th building block – Competitive Greatness.

On both sides of the Pyramid, in essence holding it together, are 10 words, including Ambition, Honesty and Integrity, once again all leading to the top, where Faith and Patience watch over Competitive Greatness.

Coach Wooden completed his ‘Pyramid of Success’ in the spring of 1948, and the original Pyramid drawing was on his office wall after he accepted the men’s basketball head coaching position at UCLA that same spring.

Some classic Wooden quotes:
“The best way to improve the team is to improve ourself.”

“Goals achieved with little effort are seldom worthwhile or lasting.”

“As long as you try your best, you are never a failure. That is, unless you blame others.”

“Much can be accomplished by teamwork when no one is concerned about who gets the credit.”

Great books by and about the legend!

S3-11: FAF – Habit vs. Skill

“Habit lies at the intersection of knowledge, skill and desire.” ~Dr. Stephen Covey

Martin and Henry discuss a topic that has many of even the top behavioral psychologists in the world have a difficult time addressing, that is, how habit and skill differ.

Think about it, is tying your shoes a skill or a habit? Or, is it both?

Martin argues that rather that trying to explain their differences we ought to put more emphasis on why they are almost the same, fraternal twins so to speak.

This matters because when we do that we can quickly dispel so many of the silly myths around habit development. For instance, that you need a reward to develop a habit or you have to perform the behavior every day or the classic myth, it takes 21 days to develop a habit. Just insert the word “skill” for habit and you can see how silly that becomes. Do you need a “reward” to develop a skill? Or, we know we can learn any skill without practicing/learning it daily. Or, imagine telling anyone you’ll have that skill in 21 days.

So, rather than fully accepting Covey’s theory and statement above, where “Skill” is a requirement for habit development. Martin tweaks it just a little so that skill is not a requirement but rather part of what is developed/created in a similar way as habit.

Habit and skill both require conditioning/strengthening, much like a muscle! Here’s a video explaining P.A.R.R. and HabitStrength? >> Meet BILL

S02-Frequently Asked Friday 21: Is My ADD Ruining Me?

It’s no accident that so many of the clinically and even non-clinically diagnosed “sufferers” of ADD / ADHD symptoms seek out and recommend The Habit Factor.

In this episode Martin shares how and why you ought to regard your ADD/ADHD as a terrific asset and not focus so much on the liability aspect in the Season II finale episode.

As it turns out, The Habit Factor was birthed as a solution to Martin’s own productivity and goal achievement challenges as chronicled in the bestseller, The Habit Factor (amazon)

Choosing to focus on the positive symptoms of ADD, we see how for instance, “seeing connections others may miss” can be a powerful asset. In fact, this is a great illustration of how The Habit Factor originally identified and published the powerful habit alignment for goal-achievement or “Habits 2 Goals” methodology. And, at the same time exposed best practices like “SMART Goals” for leaving out habit entirely.

Finally, Martin shares that it’s time for him to dive head first into some big projects and moves and wrap-up Season II. All new listeners are encouraged to revisit some of the older episodes!

S02-Frequently Asked Friday 20: Why Is Tracking Important?

“What gets measured gets done!”

A great question and now after about thirteen years of tracking important behaviors/habits Martin shares that it’s almost impossible to imagine achieving any goal without tracking those behaviors/habits that align with his goals.

Martin sets the table be recounting how and where tracking first entered and influenced most of our lives; school! The teacher tracked our attendance and our grades. Why? So we would know (in real time) whether we were progressing or not. Then he touches on a quick anecdote about a great camp director on Catalina who used to warn that kids that the counselors were tracking their BMs (seriously).

Then Martin shares how tracking behaviors or habits is time-tested and proven process to achieve goals and once again cites and refers listeners to a prior, “Be Like Ben” Mind Bullet Monday episode #11!

So, if you haven’t experienced and dedicated yourself to tracking (for a period of 28 days) please check out the P.A.R.R. methodology for habit development that underscores the importance and the best way to track.

Here’s a quick/short video to illustrate!

To further illustrate the importance, consider watching a basketball game where there was no scoreboard. How would you feel about that? How would the players feel? How focused would the players be? How committed to winning would the players be? Could you tell who was winning or losing?

Absurd, right?

Yet, we dare go through our lives NOT tracking what is important to us? Do you know if you’re winning or losing? How committed to the outcome can you really be? As though, a basketball, football or pick your sport is more important than your own goals and ambitions!

Martin further shares that nobody, ever, has emailed or commented to him to say that P.A.R.R. doesn’t work. That is because the only way it doesn’t work is if the person doesn’t follow through.

Once they Plan, Act, Record and Reassess they begin to develop the essential habits that will lead them to their goal!

To wrap things up Martin shares that perhaps the greatest tracker and goal achiever he knows is a man named Jack Daly — a friend and mentor. (http://www.jackdaly.net) And, how Jack is a tremendous inspiration who shares his quarterly tracking stats that include things like; bicycle miles per month, wine drinking days, nights at home, nights on the road (for work), miles run, miles flown, etc.

This is a can’t miss FAF episode if you’ve ever wondered about the significance of tracking your behaviors and to inspire you to start TODAY in order to help you reach your most important goals!

S02-Frequently Asked Friday 09: Got Happiness? A Prelude to a Webinar

Your level of happiness will influence everything from your health to your income and seemingly everything else in between, including relationships and even career success, yet few take the time to learn and understand this important subject.

As a prelude to the Happiness Webinar Martin is hosting on 4/28/16 (6:30pm) PST, Martin discusses many of the influencing factors that contribute to one’s level of happiness throughout their lifetime.

Register here for the Happiness Webinar!

It was Buddha who reportedly said, “There is no way to happiness. Happiness is the way.” In a similar vein, Abe Lincoln once commented, “People are just about as happy as they make their minds up to be.”

It’s clear, though, that happiness can often be far more than just a choice — there may be at least a dozen other contributing factors from relationships to control, expectations, and even our ability to accept events and how much “hope” we have in our lives. All of these can influence how we might feel from one moment to the next.

The key is knowing what those factors are, and how to best manage and take control and responsibility over them to improve our own levels of happiness.

Check out this short episode now…
