S3-38: FAF – How Can I Control My Temper?

“If you are patient in one moment of anger, you will escape one hundred days of sorrow.” ~Chinese Proverb

Not to long ago we had an entire episode about enhancing mindfulness. Today’s topic is very related and it has to do with some ideas, tips and best practices, even mindsets around how to best control one’s temper.

MG and Henry trade some tips and share some stories… Henry talks about his experience recently where he was so upset he had to go hit a punching bag (NOT people) for an extended period of time. “Try that for just one minute and you’ll be winded and you’ll also be addressing your ‘fight or flight’ natural response to anger and stress. It’s a great way to address the pent up energy.”

Martin then reflects on the very powerful and insightful statement: “Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.” Viktor E. Frankl

Then, MG shares this gem from Thomas Jefferson, “When you are angry count to ten, and if very angry count to one hundred.”

Check it out and hear how to keep your cool when frustration and anger set in!

S02-Mind Bullet Monday 10: As A Man Thinketh

What thoughts are you choosing and encouraging?

“This little volume (the result of meditation and experience) is not intended as an exhaustive treatise on the much-written upon subject of the power of thought. It is suggestive rather than explanatory, its object being to stimulate men and women to the discovery and perception of the truth that –
They themselves are makers of themselves
by virtue of the thoughts which they choose and encourage; that mind is the master-weaver, both of the inner garment of character and the outer garment of circumstance, and that, as they may have hitherto woven in ignorance and pain they may now weave in enlightenment and happiness.” As a Man Thinketh, ~James Allen

Martin kicks off this episode with a quick read of the above foreword by James Allen and then breaks down some of the main ideas, sharing his experience as it relates to Allen’s opening insights.

“Mind is the master-weaver, both of the inner garment of character and the outer garment of circumstance…”

Our habits of thought and behavior direct and dictate our circumstance, our present condition and then, ultimately shape and define our character.

Our unique capacity to take mindful control of THOUGHT— to direct our thinking toward our goals and ambitions is omnipotent. Or, we can waste the capability and allow it to drift idle and aimless.

This episode ends with a bit of a challenge — to be mindful of our thoughts and our speech and ask, “What are your thoughts weaving today and what form will they assume tomorrow?”

We all have this unique gift… the powerful capacity to develop  new habits of thought. And, it can only begin with awareness and then the intention to apply it consciously.

You can get to do this any time you decide!

Enjoy the episode and be sure to share this Mind Bullet Monday with your friends!
