S3-30: MBM – DEATH.

Martin and Henry attempt to tackle this MASSIVE MBM, “Mind Bullet Monday” topic? the unlikely value that is inherent in death.

While death is a tragic? the IDEA of death especially to the living ; ) provides immense value when it is used as a tool to inspire immediacy and action and add more life to the present!

Martin says, “I had no idea we were going to go here but, Steve Jobs commencement speech at Stanford immediately comes to mind.” “Consider” he says, how Jobs’ acute awareness to his limited amount of time might’ve factored as a catalyst to Apple’s growth in his final years.”

Martin even reads a few sentences from Jobs’ Stanford 2005 commencement speech:

“… It is Life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.”

Henry praises his wife and her sense for immediacy and action and doing things that are important recognizing there really are no guarantees.

MG insists that just the word and idea of death forces one to think immediately about life and even how they are living and of course, what they want to accomplish BEFORE they die! Then both MG and HE review a few short and powerful exercises that YOU CAN DO around the idea of death to inspire action and more LIFE TO YOUR LIFE!

This episode is the perfect reminder on this Thanksgiving Day! While most people will tell you to be grateful for the fact that you are alive, have clean air and water and live (hopefully) in a FREE country. Martin changes the discussion pointing to an essential gift that is often overlooked.

What we ought to be thankful for is our UNIQUE capacity to choose our thoughts! To direct our attention, intention and focus.

If we “feel whatever we focus upon” then the question to ask is, “WHO is holding your flashlight?”

One more time: “WHO is holding your flashlight?” Who decides what you will focus upon at any moment?

This Thanksgiving we get to recognize that our FIRST debt of gratitude ought to be the fact that we hold a most unique gift— the ability to direct our awareness.

In fact, it’s this capacity that allows US TO BE GRATEFUL this Thanksgiving.

So, should you be thinking that you have NOTHING to be grateful for, think again— and then use your gift of awareness as it was intended! ; )

Consistent to theme, Martin shies away from the idea that there are just 3 Daily habits and redirects the quora.com user toward a better understanding of HABIT (singular).

This way, the user is empowered to craft intentionally the habits that will help them achieve their goals and desires rather than being constrained by 2 or 3 habits that another person might prescribe!

Knowing that the “answer” is about understanding the nature of HABIT is akin to “teaching a man to fish” vs. feeding him a fish.

Nobody has more than twenty-four hours, yet some people get far ahead of others.

Martin kicks off this episode sharing an observation Napoleon Hill made decades ago— how you use your “other” eight hours of your 24 hours will be make all the difference in your future results and paves the way for your “success”!

How are you using the “other” eight?

If success is creating your ideal future, then what you study, the skills and habits you develop in those other eight hours become essential to help you craft your ideal future.

Sadly, it appears most people waste those other eight hours on frivolous activities. Certainly, we all need rest and recreation but those other eight hours are the key — the path to a brighter, better future.

What would happen if you devoted just 15 minutes (of the other eight) consistently?

Since you probably plan on living another two or three years, devoting just 15 minutes a day, 5 times a week studying ANY skill or trade will likely make you an expert or put you very close to expertise and far ahead of others.

S02-Frequently Asked Friday 08: How to Quit A BAD Habit

“It’s crazy… so many habit apps allow you to track bad habits. Please, please, do not ever track BAD HABITS you’re just putting attention and focus on what you do NOT want!”

“To eliminate a bad habit replace it with a good one.”

Martin begins this episode by sharing how the environment is the first line of defense (or maybe even offense) when trying to kill a BAD Habit. Modifying your environment helps you to remove the common triggers and allows you to create impediments to executing the behavior you are trying to avoid.

Next, Martin shares a famous quote by a Dutch Renaissance Theologian, Desiderius Erasmus who said, “A nail is driven out by a nail, habit is replaced by a habit.” Replacement is the key to elimination, NOT just removing the bad behavior… “that creates a vacuum!”

Finally, the listener is encouraged to revisit a prior episode “3 Bad Habit Busting Tips” and in that episode— as here, Martin revisits the “3 Ments” when it comes to killing a bad habit; environment, replacement and finally experiment.
